Cuba: Unique Tourist Destinations
Date: MAY 11, 2009
Other Reports

Cuba, which offers a wide range of tourist options, including excellent beaches, culture, nature and history, has one-of-a-kind destinations that are visited by thousands of foreign vacationers every year.

In addition to traditional destinations such as Varadero (in the western province of Matanzas), Holguín, Trinidad and Santiago de Cuba, many islets of the Cuban archipelago are gaining grounds as favorite destinations for foreign vacationers. That is the case of Cayo Largo del Sur.

South of the big island, Cayo Largo del Sur is one of those peculiar sites for leisure, with 24 kilometers of excellent beaches, and white and thin sand that never gets very hot.

Vacationers can enjoy a refreshing swim and a tropical tan at such beaches as Sirena, which is two kilometers long; Lindamar, which looks like a shell, Paraíso and Los Cocos (the latter takes its name due to the existence of many coconut trees).

Admiral Christopher Columbus landed on Cayo Largo del Sur in 1494, and many corsairs and pirates turned the islet into their base of operations in the Caribbean Sea.

Nature on the islet is well preserved, with large coral reefs that are complemented by the beauty of neighboring keys, inhabited by many plant and animal species, including iguanas, pelicans and turtles.

Visitors to Cayo Largo del Sur can enjoy the beauty of the surrounding sea bottoms, where they can practice scuba diving and snorkeling, as well as taking excursions to nearby natural spots.

The development of the hotel infrastructure on Cayo Largo del Sur offers options to meet the demand from tourists, who can stay at the Sol Club Cayo Largo, Sol Pelícano and Barceló Cayo Largo Beach Resort hotels.

Several villas like Lindamar, Soledad and Coral complement the accommodation offers, in addition to marinas and dive centers for those interested in exploring the beautiful sea bottoms surrounding the key.

Among the latest actions to continue to develop the islet is an agreement between the Qatari Resorts Company and the Cuban firm Gran Antillana to build the Gran Paraiso hotel.

The new joint venture will build a five-star, 405-room hotel as part of a project that also includes 60 villas and a shopping center.

Therefore, tourism activity in Cuba ratifies its excellence by spreading to dozens of islets that make up the Cuban archipelago, beyond traditional destinations on the big island.
